Deciding how to offer a review of the third-generation Squeezebox by Slim Devices without gushing forth a stream of typical market-speak accolades ("Incredible!" "Outstanding!" "A must-have for any music lover!") is not easy. And even more difficult, given all that Squeezebox has going for it, is deciding where to start describing the wealth of features this little box boasts.

Squeezebox gives you full control over your entire digital music library. And it couldn't be easier. (Black model and remote shown).

From Digital Files to High Performance
Although the tools to convert CDs to digital files have become standard fare on nearly every computer, by comparison the tools needed to play those files on a high-performance sound system can be clunky, inconvenient, and downright frustrating to use. Until recently, our options have been either to drag expensive computers to the living room and wire them directly to our stereos, or to buy an expensive digital music player that we then need to continually plug and unplug.

Enter Squeezebox to save us from this hassle. After plugging this streamlined device into your stereo via a standard RCA cable, and taking all of five minutes to download software to your computer and configure Squeezebox to your wireless network (okay, maybe seven minutes if you're chewing gum at the same time), you can immediately start "pulling" music off your Mac or PC for full-sounding playback through your entertainment system. Imagine being able to keep your computer on your desk, and your digital player in your pocket, and still crank your digital music with abandon! It's really that simple: within a few minutes of unpacking the Squeezebox, your digital files are yours for the asking from the comfort of your couch. (Squeezebox is also offered in a "wired-only" model that connects directly to the Internet via an Ethernet cable.)

Once Squeezebox is set up, it immediately presents your music on its easy-to-read display by genre, artist, song, album and even year. With the help of a handy remote, you can scroll through just about every music file on your computer and play songs in whatever sequence you desire. As long as your digital files are in a single location (in your iTunes folder, for instance), Squeezebox will get them to you. Although your computer must be on in order to play your digital files, you don't necessarily have to start it up just to play your music. Squeezebox also gives you the option of using the remote to wake your PC or Mac from a "sleep" state remotely, adding to the system's ultimate ease of use.

Squeezebox supports most popular formats, such as AAC (on Mac or Windows), and AIFF, FLAC, MP3, Ogg Vorbis, WAV or WMA (Windows only). The sound quality is limited only by how well you burned your CDs in the first place, and by the performance of your entertainment system.

Surely there must be a catch, you're probably thinking. In fact, there are a couple of glitches that beg for improvement in the next-generation model.

First, while you can create play lists for Squeezebox on your computer via the software's browser interface -- a somewhat clunky procedure --, or with the remote itself -- an easier, though still time-consuming process --, Squeezebox could not access the play lists we had already created in our iTunes player. According to the manufacturer, only iTunes users suffer from this problem; Squeezebox recognizes lists created in Windows Media and other popular players. The second issue has to do with encrypted files. Simply put, it can't play any files you purchase or download from an online store, such as the iTunes Music Store, that are protected. For those files, you'll have to continue to resort to the primitive plug-and-play method.

Internet Radio without a Computer
In addition to playing digital files, you can use Squeezebox to stream Internet radio straight into your living room without a computer. Squeezebox feeds directly from your wireless network to do this. With the Web interface, or via the remote, you can create a list of your favorite Internet radio stations for streaming. Squeezebox also comes loaded with several stations covering the full array of musical genres, from jazz and world music, to 70's pop and 90's electronica. For news junkies, Squeezebox can also stream your favorite RSS feeds across its aqua blue display.

About the size of a bedside digital alarm clock, Squeezebox can sit inconspicuously on any horizontal surface. The ports, all located on the back of the unit, include a mini headphone jack, RCA connections, a digital optical output and coax output, and an Ethernet connection. An extremely intuitive interface on Squeezebox lets you easily configure the display's text size, illumination, screen saver, and track information.

I am a gadget freak and this is without a doubt the COOLEST toy I own. After ripping my entire CD collection to WMA lossless and later converting to FLAC to get the advantage of replaygain volume leveling, I can now instantly play any song or playlist from over 400 CDs, quickly searching via artist name, album, genre, or a custom playlist. The networking setup is not quite as easy or simple as it should be, especially if you are using wireless or multiple PCs running multiple servers. But it's not that hard, either, and I was able to figure it out and once I did, it works consistently and very, very well. The sound quality is absolutely as good as from the original CDs. The remote is not bad, but it could be even better, but it's just as easy to run the interface from a laptop using wi-fi, even if your music library is on another network computer or hard drive. The support on the slim devices forums and knowledgebase are very good, and if you really need some hand-holding you can call them and talk to a live person for help. Seriously, you set this up and you will start feeling like a pro DJ- all you need is a VIP guest list...

I'm not going to do an in-depth review of because so many other folks have, but I'll give my two cents. I've owned a Squeezebox for over 2 years now and it has worked flawlessly the entire time. Setup was easy from what I remember (it's been a while), sound quality is fantastic (especially when using FLAC files), and it looks so good sitting on my shelf with my Onkyo TX-NR901. In fact frustration with Onkyo's built in music server is what prompted me to buy the Squeezebox. This is one gadget I have never had one iota of buyers remorse for... ever.

** Update (Feb 1, 2010)**

I bought this device back in 2007 when it was still produced my Slim Devices. I gave it 5 stars. Sadly, Slim Devices was purchase by Logitech recently. Where the original Slim Server, written by Slim Devices, worked out of the box, I cannot say the same for more recent versions produced by Logitech. I have recently updated to the most recent version of SqueezeBox Server and have had nothing but problems. The most serious is the inability to use my music library. It's simply not there. It was working two days ago and is now nowhere to be seen in the SqueezeBox menu, and Squeeze Server is unable to see the files though they are playable through traditional players. Previous versions produced since Logitech's acquisition have had their own share of issues. If you're going to buy a Squeeze box, beware the software.

I have recently decided to enter the 20th century and made my computer/printer wireless. Then, what the heck, how about the stereo too. This is new and daunting stuff for me (I'm much older than 14). Once I got the coumputer wireless to satellite (LinkSys), then came the print server (NetGear)--no problem with either. The stereo connection was simplest of all. In less than 20' (including reading the instructions) I was streaming my CD collection to my stereo. Only one glitch. After about 1/2 hour, the computer-squeezebox interface (Web) failed to find the Squeezebox. What fixed it was going through the Squeezebox setup again. (It had everyting I had previously entered so I just stepped through.) I has worked for the last 2 hrs. w/o problems. If you don't hear from me again on this, assume that it is still working well. Frankly, I'm amazed that this suite of mixed-maker products work together. I know, they should, but realistically, how often do electronics interface as they advertise?

ADDITION: After a month or so, I still greatly enjoy this product, but there are glitches. When my network goes down, sometimes the Squeezebox does not come back up with the rest. I found that unplugging it then going through the setup menu (accepting everyting as it is presented) brings it back up. Simple unplugging and powering up does not work.

Also, I have Panasonic home theater with wireless back speakers. I had to move the WiFi to channel 11 to prevent interference and buy new wireless phones too (Panasonic DIRECT 6.0). It's a learning experience! Not hopelessl, though!

Ok...no problems here...has worked perfectly from second one...sound quality is truly outstanding...ability to play back not only mp3's but multiple higher-quality formats (.wav and flac)...the internet tuning capability works fantastically well (tune by city, genre, popularity, etc.)...but what really makes the unit is the interface, it is speedy and intuitive...highly recommended.

I too can relate to all of the reviewers who can not get sound. Slim Devices drops my wireless signal about every three minutes. It is very rare that it will play a whole song. I have tried a linksys G router, a US Robotics router, and now a D Link router. I am not using other wireless resource while it is playing besides my latop. All of my other wireless devices show "excellent" signal strength while this thing can not seem to locate a network. Customer support said it was my router's power settings. I am on my third router from three different manufactures and I think it is the sqeezebox. I would recommend passing on this product as I am sitting here playing MP3s on my laptop speakers looking at my Squeexebox screen stating its usual "Problem, can't find a wireless network" message.

"The jury is out..." 2009-01-30

Just received the SparkLan WUBR-501 wireless adapter today. This model, as per the manufacturer's website, is supposed to include a USB cradle. There was no USB cradle shipped with my order. I contacted the seller and am awaiting his response. I hope this was just an oversight.

I installed the adapter and so far so good. It seems to work fine. I'll post more once I hear back from the seller.

Doesn't work with my Sony Vaio with windows 7! Repeated failure to recognize the USB software. Occasionally worked, but droped out again and again. High pitchy frequency noise when it did work. We asked for help from the service department at JLAB audio which proved slow and unprofitable.

I ordered this speaker a few months ago based on the good reviews on Amazon. I have to say, there is NOTHING Bose-like, or even good, about this little speaker. The sound is tinny and sometimes forces a reboot in order not to come out static-y. It makes a sound like it is lying against a metal object when it isn't...For $40, I'd say definitely not worth it. I am ordering a replacement today after only a few months and am going to spend a little more to get something that sounds decent. Am upset to have wasted $40. Save your money.

I travel a lot and like to play music in my hotel room through my laptop but wanted to get something with more juice than the speakers built into my laptop. I was extremely disappointed when I first heard these speakers. They were so weak and distorted I switched back to my Laptops speakers after just a couple minutes of the weak, fuzzy distorted sound they made. They were clearly weaker than my laptops built-in speakers, which are not that great.

I recommend these only if your current laptop does not have its own speakers, otherwise it's basically the same or worse for playing music as standard built-in laptop speakers.

This is a well designed (except for on small thing - see below) little gadget/product/speaker. It works exactly as advertised. Not meant to be mini Bose speakers. They are just much better versions of laptop internal speakers that can be pointed in any direction rather than the ones in the laptop that are weak and lame and point straight up instead of at the listener usually. Just plug and play. I was looking for a pair of mini stand-alone speakers for a computer that I use for youtube and instructional video type stuff where I don't need great stereo audio but the internal speakers just aren't good enough. This is where these fit it. They take up no actual desk space and are much louder than the internals and quality is good too. I ordered another one and I wouldn't hesitate to give these as gifts. My one tiny con is that it doesn't have an on/off or volume control but they work off of the same controls as the internals so wtf.

"AAlpha1 watt remote USB aadapter" 2009-12-13

This is a good little USB network adaptor and works as advertised.

Background: I have a Dell laptop with an internal network card. I travel a lot and use it in hotels and hot spots quite a bit. The signal I was getting on the internal card with its two internal antenna's was weaker then I would like and usually doesn't get a strong enough signal to maintain 54 Mbps speed. I was usually down around 11 Mbps in a hotel room. Sometimes I have had to move to a different room, move to a balcony, or a certain point in the room to get a signal at all. In one hotel room I checked signal right after checking in and I could only get a usable signal near the door holding the computer up near the ceiling. I had to walk around the hotel to find a group of rooms that I thought would work and then coordinate with he front desk on availability and change rooms.

I researched many options, reading reviews, etc. Most other options were more expensive or problematic, including modifying my computer to install an external antenna. I looked at USB cards with the mail plug that plug into the computer without using an extension, pcmcia cards with external antenna's, directional antenna's, etc. Most of the reviews I read were from kids "War Driving" but still shed some light on how well this card works.

What I got: I went with the Alpha because of good reviews I read, and the fact that I can remote locate it using an extension giving more options then one mounted to the computer. The unit looks pretty cheap being plastic. Nothing special. It came with the two antennas. I ordered the two extension cables. One is passive and one is active (active is required for longer extensions).

Functionality/Results: It works well. So far I have not been in a Hotel where I didn't get an 88% or better connection (signal strength) with 85 or 90% link quality or better, and more importantly a link with 54 Mbps speed. I get many more signals too, but that is not what I was looking for in most cases. I have tried it in a dozen or so hotels and played with outside signals a bit. There are a lot of them out there.

The ability to move the antenna 10 to 25 feet away could be useful to get it on a balcony, outside a window, get around a concrete wall, etc. but I haven't had to do that yet with the Alpha. Once in the Bahamas, using the computers internal card, I had to get out on a balcony with a 40 mph wind coming off the ocean that would knock over the laptop if I didn't hold on to it, to get a clear shot to the hotel main building where the router was located. I had to weather the salt spray and either had to hold the computer screen to keep it from swaying so I could see it or hold my wine glass to keep it from tipping over. I needed three hands and it was a tough decision as to which two things to hold. That is when I decided to order this card. I read about folks on sail boats running the Alpha up the mast and getting a signal 4 or 10 miles off shore and putting the unit in a zip-loc bag to keep it out of the elements.

If I had modified my computer for an external antenna, or gotten a pcmcia card with external antenna, I could have run coaxial cable to a remote antenna to get the same position benefits, but the signal losses are large that way and signal cuts in half with every few feet of coax. With this adapter the antenna is run right into the transmitter/receiver and there is no loss, however you still have the ability to remote locate it up high in a room, outside a window, on a balcony, etc. without the loss. You don't get the signal loss from a USB cable, although you do run out of power if run too far. 25 feet with the two supplied cables is plenty for me.

Power: The high power is meaningless and probably a lie. I think they are claiming equivalent radiated power with a good antenna to some poor antenna standard like the antenna's printed on a pcmcia adapter card circuit board or something. Anyway it is not really a 1000mW adapter, but it does work well. The allowable power output is somewhat complicated but is based on radiated power (the combined effect of the transmitter and antenna). Anyway a balance of output power, receiver sensitivity, and selectivity is what is important and this one does a good job. It gets quite warm too only having passive cooling (vents).

Antenna's: Like many folks have reported, the big antenna doesn't seem to work any better for me then the little one. Sometimes it will get a slightly stronger signal and more signals with it, but the link quality (signal to noise ratio) is worse. The little antenna has worked fine in all cases so far and just as well as the big one on comparison.

Software: The software installed easily for me with Windows XP and I have had no problems. The software is between OK to fairly nice. I can still enable my internal card and use it when the signal is strong and I don't want to carry the Alpha. I disable it when using the Alpha.

Works great. Hope it last a long time.

If you are looking for solutions for your home (or work) because of problems with range on your Wifi you might also try one of the homemade paper directional parabolic antenna's that you print off from the internet. They really work and also increase security if positioned properly by directing coverage to within your house and decreasing coverage outside. They work will with this unit too. Requires a router with external antenna(s). You can also put one on the antenna of the Alpha and beam signals between the router and the Alpha. Quite effective. You print out a template from the internet, cutout a couple pieces of paper, cover one with foil or aluminum tape, stick the parabolic template together to the flat sheet to form the shape, and position the unit on the antenna of your router. Just do a search on "DIY windsurfer parabolic WIFI antenna" as Amazon doesn't' allow links. Also watch one of the Vid's on it.

"Good, but don't update the driver!" 2009-09-28

This is a good antenna but a longer antenna will make it unstable so that it will be easy to knock over unless you do something to prevent this of course. It's not a big deal. THIS is a big deal though: this month or last month I had upgraded the ASUS realtek driver that this thing uses, which, stupidly, tries to be it's own wireless connection manager in place of windows'. Windows' is poor but it's a hell of a lot easier to figure out than asus'. This stupid asus wifi manager that comes with the online driver, whatever, it when it starts DISABLES THE WIFI ANTENNA BY DEFAULT, and the tray icon is obscure and the software doesn't let you know it's being it's own wifi-manager and over-riding windows'. This stupid wifi manager from asus is so annoying, and rolling back the driver just made it more buggy. This stupid newer driver has given me problems ever since I had it, and finally I'm not able to use either my laptop's built in wifi hardware or this adapter no matter what I do. ASUS should refund me so that I can afford a new HP 2133 laptop. I'm going to have to buy an external dvd drive to fix my laptop now by fixing the OS.

I've been using this wireless router for about eleven months, but for the past two months it's been very unreliable.

When it runs, it does pretty well. Its range is much better than the wireless-G LinkSys router it replaced. With this router sitting on top of my desktop PC in a room on the second floor of our house, the signal picked up in the basement two floors away is usually 70%-80% strength. I don't have anything with a 5GHz adapter, so I can only comment on my experiences with the 2.4GHz freq radio.

This WRT610N would run fine for weeks at a time, and then for no reason, it would drop signal, (confirmed by none of the other three PCs in the house could detect its signal). Most times it would recover when I pulled out its power cord and let it reset itself, but sometimes it would not recover wireless capability for hours or days once it went dead. (The PC this router is sitting on is hard-wired to it, so I always had at least one PC using its Gigabit connectivity to my cable modem to the outside world). I experimented with other brand firmware, and also experimented with cooling it with a fan to see if this was heat-related, but I was never able to conclude what was causing the random signal drops. LinkSys tech support was not helpful, and the LinkSys web site forums only had postings from others with the same problem with this unit.

I was talking with my neighbor (who lives a few houses away) last week, and asked him about this router. He writes reviews professionally for data communications publications, (aka "he's a lot brighter than I am with wireless routers"). He told me he's been having identical problems with his personal WRT610N also, and he'd finally disposed of it and replaced it with a D-Link model (that I can't remember).

I'm not sure with which brand/model I'll replace this now-dead unit, but I don't think it'll be with another LinkSys-Cisco consumer wireless router.

Of course, as always, your mileage may vary.

Hi Guys.

First off I do want to point out that Linksys/Cisco has updated the firmware on this badboy to address the overheating issues. They have also moved forward to supply a second revision to this router (V2) which deals better with these issues and also greatly extends range and throughput of signals.

Currently I am using this as a conduit for all my network activity. I work heavily with very large H264 encoded files so I need a very fat internal pipe to get this data back and fourth. With this thing I am getting 12MB/s throughput to a mac located on the other side of 18" thick firewalling.

I have never seen a stronger signal in my life when it comes to transmission rates. Internal rates are amazing as are the hard wire gigabit connections.

The only con I would say would be that this USB connection can not be used as a printer connection ( that I know of ) and the filesystem support for USB NETDISK support only allows for FAT32 partition. This FAT32 is really the standard for network mounts - I would just be happier seeing something like EXT3 support here or even MACOS support as I have all sorts of uses I will be throwing at this thing.

The only comperable router on the market is sold by mac for roughly the same price so make your comparisons before buying.

I bought this router on last november, the startup was ok, i was replacing my old and great linksys wrt54gs, some minutes after using it, i lost all connections, when i check the router, i was very hot, and all the setup returns to factory default, i repeat al the setup process, but after some minutes it happens again.

On january Linksys published a firmware update, i applyed this firmware, the router starts working better, after 10 days all connections came out LAN and Wireless, the temperature of the router was ok, but all setup returns to factiry default. I contacted Linksys support and check that there is a lot of people with the same problem, Linksys support indicates that there is no estimation for a new firmware release, they give a ticket numbre to return and exchange my router, this would be ok if i am in the US and have access to return it to Amazon, since i am out the US i am feeling really bad bacause of a bad product delivered to the market.

So i will wait for the next firmware update, or DD_WRT that is working on an alternate firmware version.

Ok network adapter. I do not see any more wireless networks. But the one im connected to hasnt dropped yet, something that happened with my linksys usb guy. Didnt even need the cd, just popped in, booted up and vista installed the drivers for me, kinda nice vista. thanks. Average performance. Was disappointed in the video quality, which was plagued with constant interferance (from my 802.11g/n wireless network router in close proximity). Camera was approximately 25 feet from receiver. Have bought other cameras/systems and the best indoor surveillance system thus far has been from Logitech, which was easy to setup and uses an A/C plug for transmitting video (interferance-free).

I purchased this speaker two months ago and it really delivers the sound. I am using it with my Acer laptop that doesn't have good output volume. I don't have to sit and strain to listen anymore. I can get up and go into another room and still hear the music I'm listening to, which is why I like it.

The only reason couldn't give it a 5-star rating is because of the connector. Like other reviewers, I find it doesn't have a snug fit into the usb port and sags a little. I have never experienced this problem with other plug-ins, so I don't understand why the company doesn't correct this. I am careful about moving the laptop with the speaker connected. My laptop pretty much stays on a tv stand so the speaker is supported by the table.

One other finding is that if the speaker isn't plugged in before I log onto the internet, the computer doesn't recognize the speaker is plugged in, so the sound comes out of the laptop instead of the speaker. I then close internet explorer, and log back on and the speaker will then work. I think thats just a problem with my laptop and not a problem with the speaker.

For $40, this improves any laptop sound by 10x. It's amazing for its size, which is only 3 x 1 inches.

It worked fine on my HP laptop running either Vista or Windows 7.

I can't imagine anyone not using this instead of their built-in laptop speakers.

I sure wish I knew how they got such sound of two tiny little "cheapo" speaker cones.

I received this little speaker as a gift to add on to my new ASUS laptop. The second I plugged it in to the USB port, my laptop shut off. We tried again in both other UBS ports and the same thing happened. I went online to see if anyone else had experienced this problem, and I read a review saying that someone else using an ASUS laptop had the same thing happen except that now, their laptop doesn't work! There is nothing in the user manual about this product not being compatible with any computers, so if you do buy this, proceed with caution.

This would be a fine solution for laptops if you happen to get one that works. Could not get my Toshiba to detect the device. Took it to my parents' house for x-mas gathering and tried on a number of computers but they didn't pick it up either. The next day I give it another shot and lo and behold my laptop picks it up and it seems to be working, and I get a few hours of use out of it. The following day I wake up my computer and nothing. Reinsert the device and nothing. Reboot and once again, nothing. No matter what I try it won't pick it up again.

I am debating getting an exchange and trying again. For what it is, the sound is okay and it certainly solves the problem of the built-in speakers being too quiet for certain media. I like to bend it in sort of an 'S' shape positioning the speaker close to the upper panel so that it doesn't hang in the USB port. So the design is fairly elegant for what it is -- maybe JLAB's Chinese slaves were just especially overworked when a few loads of these were being assembled and some faulty units got by them. All things considered, you might be better off with headphones or something more reliable (or made in the USA, if anything like this is actually made here anymore!)

At the current time (January 2010) Linksys does not support this adapter (WUSB600N) on Windows 7 and there is no Windows 7 driver available from Linksys. Do not believe the Linksys Windows 7 Compatibility FAQ that says otherwise. If you wish to have support from Linksys for this adapter on Windows 7, verify that Linksys has a Windows 7 driver to download before buying it.

Note also that hardware version 1 of this adapter, which is what you will probably get if you order a recertified or refurbished adapter, or if your vendor has old stock, may never be supported by Linksys on Windows 7.

There are Windows 7 drivers available for this adapter from other sources (Windows 7 RTM includes one, and the chipset manufacturer, Ralink has one), but they are not supported by Linksys.

Linksys will probably support hardware version 2 of this adapter on Windows 7 eventually.

I always use Amazon for reviews. My experience with this booster is that it is great! It needed only to be attached via the USB port and windows 7 recognized it quickly and it worked immediatly. My house is about 200ft from the router and the signal strength was only 2 bars, at best, before installing GSKY. The strength is 4 and 5 bars now. I'm very pleased. It was cheap too.

I installed this on a Sony VAIO with windows 7. At first I could not read the cd that came with the unit but after working with it for a while I got the drivers to load. The computer gives two options to operate in. You can use the built in software on the computer or the G Sky software. The built in unit found 4 WiFi signals and the G Sky found 18 WiFi signals and could easly connect to any of them with 2 or more bars.

I bought this because my ASUS netbook wouldn't pick up my wireless network signal in the family room (maybe 40 feet away). I wanted to be able to hook up the netbook to my HDTV and watch some TV shows off the Internet that I can't otherwise watch. First, the only instructions are on the CD and (for me) they were very confusing and incomplete- assumed much greater knowledge than I have. So, while I could pick up the wireless signal with the antenna, it took me a couple days of fooling around with it before I figured out how to get the computer to understand it. When I did get it working, the transmission was far too slow for streaming video. I guess I didn't understand the difference between 802.11b/g and 802.11n.

I had a problem last week; it would not even be recognized when I plugged it into a USB port. I tried my 2 other PC's and still the USB didn't recognize it. I requested an RMA from Blue Proton but before shipping it back at my cost, I thought I would plug it in again...it worked this time. So I used it for my WiFi connection for the past 5 days and it's working again.

So the jury is still out. I like the power when it works, that's why I hope it doesn't quit on me again. We'll see.

I don't have a home network, I purchased this for traveling. During setup, it looks for a nearby network, but I live in the boonies and there were none around. So I called tech support just to make sure I understood what to do in my situation. They answered right away (almost no hold time) and were very helpful. Turns out I was indeed interpreting the setup correctly & could have set it up without the call to tech support. But it was nice to have prompt knowledgeable support nonetheless!

Out of the box this device has clear directions. I did not believe them so I just plugging in the CD and blindly followed the steps to first setting up the print server on the wireless router then setting it up on each computer separately. The trick was to have the computer already using the printer before setting up the print server. The software does all the work and uses the DHCP from the router.

Just a note I did set up the WAP as I have neighbors.

Even with the server hidden behind the printer I get reception a hundred feet away with no problem. I have not tried farther.

Be aware of ethernet cable issues. Even though the Cat5e spec is for cables up to 300 meters long, you may have issues with a much shorter cable, depending on factors such as the quality of the cable, the connections, bends in the cable, etc. I experienced data loss with a 90 foot cable.

Otherwise, the adapter works fine with a shorter cable.

Let's get this straight once and for all. GB and Gb are NOT the same. GB is Gigabyte and Gb is gigabit. B == Byte and b == bits. 8 bits make a byte so now you can calculate the numbers on your own.

I bought this product as a B-Day gift for myself as I would like to have a GigaBit Network Interface Card for my laptop so I can get the full potential usage of my clients gigabit networks and transfer data at alarming rates compared to a 100 Mb network speeds.

The Cons: The cover which has the "Linksys" logo on it, it keeps popping off, it is not a full molded piece as it appears and you have to lift the top up in order to insert the patch cable. After a while of wear, sometimes if you move laptop and the wire is hanging off down to the floor your connection comes disconnected from your network. And forget about D.O.S. support driver for using Ghost to link up to your network to image your laptop. Not a very good move on Linksys' part to work in a commercial environment when a user "corrupts" or thrashes their operating system.

The Pro's: Reliable within Windows' XP operating system. Never skips a beat and is very fast when connected to a GigaBit network. Transfer 3 GigaBytes at about 1 GigaByte a minute so three minutes for 3GB or over 60 GB in an hour. I transfer over 10-15GB to back up critical data (My Documents) frequently because I corrupt my Operating System or experiment with other Operating Systems like Linux builds such as SuSE and Mandriva distros, but have not used this PCMCIA Network Interface Card with these Linux Distros yet. I have been too busy with life to toy with them, yet. But I bet this will be supported with Mandriva 2008.0 and a newer version of SuSE (9.2 is the latest I have).

Overall: Great Buy, Great Price, Great Product (For the most part).

Maybe it's just me, because the other reviews love it, but I bought it to upgrade my laptop from 100Mbs to Gigabit and it downloads much slower on this than on the integrated 100Mbs Ethernet. I have tried everything to get it working faster and gave up, pulled it out and now it is a paperweight. Gave it 2 instead of 1 because it does work, you can get connectivity on it, just I could not at anywhere close to claimed speeds.

This antenna did not work for my application, but what impressed me was the action of wifi world. When they saw I was displeased with my review, they called me, gave me suggestions, and when that did not work, they refunded completely, including shipping, and even sent me a postage paid package to sent it back to them in.

This antenna did not improve my connection, but it probably would in some instances. However, if you buy from wifi world, they will make it good.

I bought this to support just 3 users in a section of a small branch office that was too cumbersome to hardwire. Unless you want to blow your credibility as a network admin, don't put this device in your network.

It continually drops connections. I have the users trained to unplug this thing when it decides to quit working which has been at least twice a week, but now it's every day, sometimes twice. How embarrassing is that to have your users have to unplug one of you devices because Linksys didn't even have the commonsense to let you reboot it from the web interface??

I've only kept this thing around because I've been waiting for a firmware upgrade. (Current version is 1 year old at the time of writing) Can't wait any longer, I'm about to lose my job. Worst network component ever.

I can't tell you what you might want to buy, but it shouldn't be this unit. I've been unable to depend on it since the day I got it. I'm quite technical, having managed tech support geeks for several years, but this contraption has tried my patience. It worked sporadically for a few weeks, sometimes had good signal strength, but mostly a weak one. Well, okay, the PC that used wireless was in another building in our house, so I was willing to give it the benefit of my doubt. Then I brought the PC into the same room as the WAP and tried to tweak and fiddle with the settings on both WAP and PC, hoping to zip up the speed and make the connection more reliable. I couldn't even get connected at that point. Updated the firmware to the latest. Reset everything to factory defaults, then painstakingly entered the WPA2 key and the SSID, plus the admin password, and all the other things like allowed MAC addresses, etc. Okay, so now I can SEE the network on my PC but I can't connect. Then after a few more connection tries, I couldn't even see the network, nothing, nada, no dice. So I've gone downhill, from a sporadic and usually slow connection in another building ... to not even seeing the wireless network while I'm literally sitting next to the WAP. That's it, I give up. I've wasted at least 50 hours on this device, it's definitely not worth the money.

I bought this because I already own an industrial-strength firewall/router and didn't need another router. Maybe that's where I went wrong, don't you do the same thing! Stay away from this money and time waster.

I recently purchased two of these Cisco WAP4410N WAPs. The goal was to help my brother-in-law cover his large home with good quality wireless. Based on my experience doing previous WAP installations, my guess was that is would take between three and six WAPs to full cover his large house (which has lots of brick and steel) with good quality coverage. I was impressed that by strategically positioning the units I was able to cover the entire house with only two of these WAPs. The coverage consisted of three floors (one was a finished basement).

The setup of these units was simple, the firmware is stable, and configuration was straight=forward. Since they were setup they have worked flawlessly and required no further attention.

The only thing a bit unusual (for those used to Netgear, Linksys, etc.) is that you have to setup a Cisco account (no charge just register online) to be able to download firmware, etc. This ended being unnecessary because the firmware in the unit was up-to-date.

If you're looking for really good WAPs that support Wireless-N and have lots of configuration options (e.g., Mesh, Multiple SSIDs, etc.) I highly recommend this unit. It has a slightly higher price than other (consumer units) you can buy, but it definitely deserves the "business-class" label that Cisco gives it.

Having been fed up with the problems I've had with building my own and buying various AP's, I decided to spend a little bit more and try this one. It's been fairly dependable. I use the "fairly" qualifier, because I have had a an issue or two, but I can't be sure it wasn't a neighbor setting up a new AP on the same channel, or something like that. Otherwise it's been solid in nearly a year of service. I really appreciate that it supports IPv6 out of the box, even in the management interface. It's got a lot more control than a regular consumer AP with things like vlan support and pretending to be multiple AP's with different SSID's, etc. One other thing is that it's more and more difficult to find a decent AP only wireless AP. At the consumer level, they all seem to be wireless routers now. I already have a firewall and only wanted an AP. This fits the bill nicely. One other feature I'm not using now, but may later is PoE.

I just installed 2 WAP4410's on a Linksys RVS4000 router and brought them up in a basic configuration just to get the system running. I will be tuning the configuration over the next few weeks and will report the results.

Right out of the box, the units worked as advertised with zero hassle. I updated the firmware, changed the admin password, assigned both static IP addresses and resolved the host name to enable roaming which has worked well thus far. I initially enabled SSID broadcast to make it easier to find for setup, but I will eventually disable. So far (anecdotal) the speed seems good, and the APs have had no issues with a mix of a/b/g/n devices. I have no plans to enable PoE, as there are known issues with the link speed dropping to 100mb/s. So far, so good.

It has now been a month, and I have enabled a second guest SSID and have configured links with a number different devices (WGA600n gaming adapter for an Xbox360, WET610N for printer with no hassle at all). The performance and range have been excellent. No problems with the VLAN or the QoS functions for streaming.

In the final analysis; a little pricey but an excellent product. 5 Stars.

I have had this phone well over a year. It has not failed me yet. I take it with me out of town..connects to open networks everywhere. I even took it to Europe twice last year..no problems. It was wonderful being able to keep in touch with family and work in such a cheap and easy fashion. I haven't experienced the heat or complications I have been reading about. Maybe I got lucky, but I would buy another one in a NY minute.

Some reviews already exist, so I'll be brief and to the point.

If you're not technology literate and expect things to work out of the box, stay away from this. Really - it's not plug_and_play. If you like to fiddle and take pride in having next gen technology work for you, you may like it. Even love it. And hey, if you have family in Europe (like I do) you will save money using this, despite the fact that long distance bills aren't what they used to be...

You *know* what Skype is, right? If you haven't used it on your PC before, forget it and stop right away. As a Skype user, for long I have wanted to replace my house landline with a Skype phone. And since I am moving out of my house for a year or more, this is a chance to set things up with next generation technology. No phone in the house. My cell and the Skype connectivity ought to be more than enough.

The phone is well packaged and appealingly designed. The cool white color and overall minimalist design display represent highlights. The packaging is simple - instructions (which you may just as well toss away, as we shall see), the phone with battery and battery cover you assemble together quickly, and finally a charger with a USB connector - simply to charge the battery. The phone itself is remarkably easy to navigate and naturally intuitive with people who have used Skype and with cell phones, it's a hybrid between the two, but geared to simply connect to a wireless router and become a stand alone Skype handset. The keyboard layout is simple, and the menu easy to navigate with the little navigation pad and the 2 softkeys.

From here, I thought things would be easy, power the phone up and then the menu seemed simple and intuitive - and my wireless setup is simple (WEP 64) and I know it by heart. But the WIP320 refused to connect. There are not many connectivity options to try, and I knew the wireless network just works.

So I had to be off to the Linksys.com support area. Lo and behold, hidden in there is a new firmware section that you *MUST* download. You *MUST* - go there right away. This required a USB cable from computer to WIP320 that is not included in the box, but if you're like me you have plenty of them around (they come with every second USB gadget).

The software update is quite fundamental. You have to download 24MB, not an unsubstantial upgrade package. You have to start with the phone turned off, and the a secret and awkward key combination that will get your WinXP computer to find a driver caller Gadget or something like that (not very intuitive) and then the upgrade process will go on and take 20 minutes or so. Not a gentle get-to-know each other phase, as you may have gathered. I am used to first generation gadgets, but this one had eve me whistling though my teeth a little.

Now to the good news: With the upgrade, the phone connected to my wireless network.

So with the installation complete, how does it work? Nicely. Very decent voice quality (which admittedly one should expect from a $80+ phone) and familiar Skype functionality. It just works.

I have not experienced any functional issues, the phone does not get warm, and the wireless functionality seems stable. Battery life seems a tad inconsistent - it will be OK at times, then again go down in big steps very quickly. But I have not run out of power.

The build quality of the phone seems somewhat flimsy, though, with key press and such feeling "cheap", but that is just an opinion and a matter of taste. I am also a tad surprised that ring tones are so limited in an expensive phone. And while having a compact cell phone format is nice, I'd prefer this phone to be a big bigger and substantial, since it is my home phone. Perhaps less plasticky feeling. But I understand other users may carry them around from Hotspot to Hotspot, and demand portability - and probably in a few years we basically all will.

Some limitations... inconsistent battery level indicator, and the power budget is definitely on the tight side - keep the phone next to your bed overnight, and the battery will be near empty the next mornin - without having made a call. Probably another firmware release away, but then again WiFi is always going to be powerhungrier than other technologies, I guess, part of the price you pay for next gen technology.

Also, for some reason I would have expected the phone to be more configurable when it came to ringtones and such - Skype allows one to import tones into the application, this phone does not. Vwery configurable it isn't. But Linksys seems to release open source code for it, so probably one will find more personalized stuff over time - a wake-up function would be nice, for example.

All in all, I am glad that Linksys presents me with this alternative to traditional telephony - it just works (after some initial fiddling that may be too much for the average user).

We purchased this phone in Februrary '08, & over the last six months have been pleased. We live aboard a sailboat in the Caribbean, & Skype is the only good (cheap + reliable) calling option. The phone seems to be as good as the internet connection. Sometimes excellent; other times not so. The battery is fine for our sometimes hour-long calls with plenty of juice left. What I don't get is why the price has gone up so much. We paid $119 with free shipping. It's worth that much. For $259, get a headset & use the computer! Not worth the expense.

I bought this product about a month ago. It's useful while working around the house with a wireless broadband connection, however, it's not that useful while away from your base.

It works on "open" wireless networks but not "free" wireless networks. Some wireless connections, such as those at McDonalds, are free. You can use a laptop to tap into the system easily but you can't use the IPhone to log in. Battery life is OK. Talk time is 2+ hours and standby time is about 20 hours before charging.

I choose this product because of it's pricepoint and the fact that it's specifically configured for my Sprint cellular modem. When I upacked the unit there was a mesage from the vendor (3Gstore.com) not to use the Linksys setup disk. After calling them for assistance, I connected the router to a laptop; pluged in the power source and my modem; logged onto the Linksys web site at 192.168.1.1; named the router and set up security. All my laptops are now connected. This is a nice router for the price and setup was very easy.

When it was time to go wireless, this was the card I bought for one main reason, it is compatible with both A and B systems. At the time of purchase (some time in late 2002) B was the dominant and widely avaialble protocol. However, A was on it's way out with the promise of a much higher transfer speed and frequency.

The bonus of a higher speed is obvious...more data, less time. The bonus of a higher frequency is less obvious. B systems operate on a 2.4 GHz frequency while A systems work off of 5.4 GHz. The problem with B networks is that many other wireless devices, such as chordless phones, use this same frequency. This sometimes causes interference and therefore, can prevent the system from working. At this point in time, there are very few devices running at 5.4 GHz so there is a less crowded area.

Keep in mind that A and B systems are NOT compatible. That's what makes this card so great, it can use both. You do not need to carry around an A card and B card anymore. Just this one.

In terms of setup, it was a snap. Pre-install some drivers, restart your computer, insert the card and everything is good to go. This was the install process for Windows XP which is the simplest one, but flawless none the less.

Please note that another standard is also available. The G system is supposed to be compatible with B systems and capable of transferring data at the same speed as A systems. However, they are also operating on 2.4 GHz so the same interference problems exist.

This is all information that you as a buyer have to take into consideration. Figure out which protocol works best for you, and get a compatible card.

"Good for iMacs...sort of" 2009-11-07

First, I read reviews for this and similar items before buying, and going with an unknown company was a bit scary for me. From what I have read, a "super" antenna doesn't always help much or work as advertised. I knew that I needed something that would pick up the gain a bit, since my daughter's iMac is at the very edge of the wireless router's range. I have a big house with plaster walls - plaster which is set with wire mesh. So the walls destroy wireless signals.

The iMac did not immediately recognize the USB connection and indicated that there wasn't enough power for the device thru the USB. This was corrected, once the software was installed. Additionally, the older iMac has a superdrive dvd (slot-loading) and the adapter has NO paper documentation - just a mini cd. The only things included in the box were the stock antenna, the extra "super" antenna, the USB cable, the wireless adapter and a mini CD. Mini cds don't work with slot-loading drives...

So, I had to copy the Mac drivers/software from the mini cd using a PC and install them on the iMac from a flash drive. Not a big deal, but if you have a Mac of any kind, chances are you'll have a slot-loading drive, so you're in trouble if that's your only computer/laptop. Make sure to get a flash drive or portable HDD and borrow a friend's laptop, in order to transfer the installer.

Once the .dmg was run, this adapter worked BEAUTIFULLY. It picks up our wireless better than my Xbox 360, which is directly over the router, and picks up almost every other wirless in the neighborhood. Definitely works as advertised, but definitely NOT easy to set up if you have a Mac. Including a full-sized CD with the software would address this shortcoming. I wish I could get one of these for each of my Xboxes.

I was previously using an USB wireless N adapter and had many problems because of the distance to my router. this caused me to experienced dial-up like speeds over the cable internet connected to my network. This was not a true for this product as this adapter is very stable and has improved the speed greatly. the software provided with this is useful and gives a good amount of information to troubleshoot any problems between your router and your adapter. The only downside i could see with this is when using the hi-gain antenna it has a larger footprint compared to other products although this is outweighed by its higher performance.

This is a good antenna but a longer antenna will make it unstable so that it will be easy to knock over unless you do something to prevent this of course. It's not a big deal. THIS is a big deal though: this month or last month I had upgraded the ASUS realtek driver that this thing uses, which, stupidly, tries to be it's own wireless connection manager in place of windows', which is poor, but better than asus'. This stupid wifi manager that comes with the online driver, whatever, it when it starts DISABLES THE WIFI ANTENNA BY DEFAULT, and the tray icon is obscure and the software doesn't let you know it's being it's own wifi-manager and over-riding windows'. This stupid thing is so annoying, and rolling back the driver just made it more buggy. This stupid newere driver has given me problems ever since I had it, and finally I'm not able to use either my laptop's built in wifi hardware or this adapter no matter what I do. ASUS should refund me so that I can afford a new HP 2133 laptop. I'm going to have to buy an external dvd drive to fix my laptop now by fixing the OS.

I was a bit disappointed with this unit. It failed to perform as well as the Linksys 400mW 802.11N USB wireless adapter in spite of it's 500mW and higher gain antenna. I had expected better performance but found that the throughput was a good deal lower, connecting at 6.5mb where the Linksys was consistent connecting at 13mb or higher. The Linksys also stays associated with the access point more consistently than this unit. I replaced the Linksys because it would disassociate on and off, but have gone back to it because it's more consistent and better performing than this 500mW unit. I would argue that it was the strongest on the market; it might have the power to be the best but it simply doesn't have the performance.

With my built-in wifi wireless network, I only got 2 kb/seconds download speed. After installing this Alfa Wireless-N 500mW 802.11n high power wireless USB adapter with Bonus Screw-On Swivel 9dBi Rubber Antenna, I could get 100 kb/seconds download speed, sometimes 1 mb/seconds depend on which wifi network my computer is connected to. In addition, my computer could find over 20 wifi networks that are around where I live. Besides, it is very light, easy to use and install. It is absolutely a wonderful product for a computer with a very slow or no immediate wifi connection.

"INCREDIBLE mouse for the price... but..." 2009-09-09

The (really) good:

1) I paid $5 for this... cheaper than most corded optical mice! Unbelievable it works at all at this price!

2) Works GREAT, on every surface I've tried it. I prefer using a coworker's back, but it would probably work well on anything on your desk. At home, I use it to "drive" a laptop that feeds video to my TV, and an RF/optical mouse is perfect for this non-ideal- surface/not-close-to-PC "work"...

3) The USB receiver docks into the mouse's backside when not in use, which also turns off the power to the mouse completely, thus saving the batteries. VERY slick. For a forgetful laptop user like me, this automatic power switch when I pack up is perfect!

4) Dongle docks smoothly, and eject button works smoothly when you want the dongle back.

5) WORKS CORDED AS WELL when the batteries die. I don't know what the above guy was doing when he said it didn't, because I actually did this FIRST before I even found batteries for it. Maybe having the dongle docked overrides this and shuts down the mouse (???? - I haven't tried...), but without dongle or batteries inserted DEFINITELY works as a corded mouse!

6) Alkaline batteries last weeks and weeks in this with moderate usage. I don't mouse CONSTANTLY, and the mouse has a powersaving mode when you're NOT wiggling it, so constant-surfer/gamers might experience something else. Apparently you can put rechargables in it and use the included retractable cord to charge them, but when the local dollar store sells 16 AAA for a buck, why bother with that?

The Bad:

1) Oddly, when you have the dongle docked, the battery door under your palm feels much looser than when not docked, as if the eject spring is pushing on the battery door. No, you don't generally use the mouse with the dongle docked, but I'm concerned about it banging around in my computer bag, opening itself, and gouging out the components inside... Hasn't happened yet, so stay tuned.

2) What the hell is the "3D functionality"? Nothing I use shows any difference from any other 3-button scroll mouse... Technical marketing lags here...

Having used this mouse for 2 weeks, I thought it was time I could offer a decent review. Overall I really like this mouse. I bought it on a whim, as the price was so low. I have done information system work for 3 decades and have used an awful lot of mice, many of which were indeed awful. I actually got a mild case of carpal tunnel from a very badly designed trackball, the pain went away when I threw it away. I provide these facts so readers will understand I know a bit about mice.

This mouse is small, well designed, works well and is a pleasure to use. The fact that the wireless usb dongle docks inside the mouse when not in use is a great idea. The satin finish on the outside is very nice and comfortable to the touch. The optical laser works well and I use it on carpet, sofa, coffe table, just about anywhere I want. It is 99% of the time recognized on boot up without having to resynch. I have not yet had to change batteries, but battery life is always an issue on wireless devices. I want to switch to rechargeable batteries so I can try the charger capabilities which are built into the mouse.

The only weak spot is that the mouse will not function as a mouse with the usb charging cable plugged in, which seems silly when the engineering is so good on every other count.

This mouse is about 1/2 the size of a standard mouse, so if you have large hands it might be problematic to use. It works great for me and is a great accessory for my netbook. Some people complain that it breaks if you drop it, but so do Ipods and many other electronic devices, my advice is don't drop it.

Its a great mouse, and I'm glad I bought it.

It was ok for the little bit it cost, it doesn't tell you that it requires batteries, or at least I didn't see that in the description. Unless you get rechargeable ones they only last about a week. I never got a chance to try rechargeables in it as my teen borrowed it and dropped it. Now it's broken. Since that happened I just knuckled down and got a better deal some where else. I paided a little more but it was well worth it as I got a mouse and keyboard for slightly more. So, if you are looking at short term use and it's compact size it's not half bad. But, hopefully the warning about the batteries will help someone. Get rechargeable as the cord that plugs into the USB will help you keep them lasting a lot longer than the regular batteries.

This wireless adapter is working well and I can recommend it to anyone looking for a PCI wireless adapter. Linksys was very clear that the adapter had to be installed before running the setup software. Pay attention to this. I ran into a problem installing the software, my own fault, and was not able to re-run the setup until I had uninstalled the software, deleted the device from my device manager, removed the adapter, rebooted, shut down, reinstalled the adapter, and started all over again. Once this was done I was able to re-run the setup again and all was well. Properly installed this is a fine product and the throughput is as advertised.

I have 12 of these puppies in our network, and I use them with the WAP54A access point. All in all they offer great speed, I typically see the advertised 54 Mbps speed range. The only thing that riles me about the WPC54A is the fact that you will have a hard time making it work with a totally plug and play laptop system.

By that I mean your BIOS will not let you choose IRQ or DMA settings, etc... I have an Inspiron 2600 that will not work with the WPC54A for more than a few minutes before it locks the system up and gives me the blue screen of death.

I narrowed it down to the PNP configuration, it tries to share IRQ 9, and it never has worked right. I think Atheros(the OEM manufacturer)should have given the user more control of the actual firmware and hardware settings of the WPC54A.

In all fairness to Linksys, the card DOES work well with the Inspiron 2500, Solo 9550, Inspiron 5100, Latitude CPI-R, Latitutde Cpt series. These are systems which use a non PNP BIOS, and you can tweak your own system settings. If you don't want to be frustrated, you can just purchase a WUSB54AG. That adapter will work with any system, I have never come across a system that it won't work with.

If you are a power user\technical sort of person, you shouldn't have any trouble with the WPC54A. When you can get it to work, it flies !

I purchased a Linksys WPC54A and a WAP54A. The WPC54a card will not work. Not under WIN XP, not under WIN 98SE.

Calling Linksys tech support (on 3 separate occasions) did not help. They blamed the notebook (a Fujitsu and Acer) or an IRQ incompatibility (although I told them the IRQ used by the WPC54A card was available).

Bottom line ... I have 2 Linksys products that do not work.

I am extremely happy with this product and its corresponding WAP54A wireless access point. I would steer clear of the dual-band as I have heard and seen nothing but bad news on that product.
I have the WPC54A card for multiple laptops at home, one running Windows ME, one running Windows 98SE, and one running Windows 2000.
I have never had a problem and this product is much faster and has a better range that the 2.4GHz products, which I had before the WPC54A and WAP54A came out.

I bought this WPC54A adapter for use with my Linksys WRT51AB access point under Windows XP but was completely unable to get it to work. It always locked up my Gateway Solo 9550 laptop within 10 seconds of plugging it in. I tried the later drivers as per tech support and after that my laptop froze immediately every time upon inserting the card. Tech support suggests that this may be an IRQ conflict, but there is no way to change the IRQ. I returned the card to CompUSA and got a Netgear HA501A card and it worked right out of the box (except turbo mode, apparently it doesn't work well with Windows XP, which by the way, is mentioned nowhere on the box). Bottom line, do your research before you buy and you will see that Linksys has some serious issues to work out with the WPC54A wireless card. Good Luck...

It's really a snap installing the kit. You only need to know your ISP information which is basically username and password along with type of connection and just follow a short set of instructions.

Once product is installed it has great coverage; even for the price. I can be the farthest away in the house, from the router, and it still works great! I recommend this kit as a solution for those of you who have an older model laptop without the built in wireless card. I shopped around for the same model around and nothing comes close to the price i got.

The router was extremely easy to setup. Linksys even has this new tool that will automatically setup the router and any other devices for you. I have not had any problems with dropped connections. I'm 100% satisfied. I recommend the router and card to anyone, as both work great and are extremely easy to setup.

Many of the reviews here are accurate and valuable. The most important piece of advice is to contact Linksys and see if your printer is supported. Having set the environment up with my HP OfficeJet K60 everything seems fine. When I go to print however, the application recognizes the printer and even knows what port it is connected on. Unfortunately, everything I print goes into a black hole. After calling Linksys support, they tell me that looking through their internal list it shows a number of poor people like myself who have tried and failed to get the K60 working, so they "assume" its not supported.

When I asked if I could get a copy of the list indicating what is supported, I was told its an internal only document. So its trial and error if you have this product.

Like other reviews, they recommended that I upgrade to the WPS11 server. Although I've been happy with Linksys, I think I'll look elsewhere first.

There are a number of posts indicating that this does not work. Just wanted to say that it worked on two of my printers. Epson 870 and Samsung 1710 laser. But it is not flawless getting it going. I seem to have a power on sequence problem. I used to turn the printer/server on at the same time. It won't initialize properly when its powered up at the same time. I've haven't figure the power on sequence but seems like the printer has to be powered on and initialized first. (But it may be the otherway around.) But when they are initialized properly, they work flawless if I don't loose power to the house. Now I leave them both on all the time. BTW, Epson's print monitor does not work with the print server.

Another thing, DON'T loose the installation disk, you can't get a replacement driver from their web site.

Linksys says this is a USB print server. Maybe it is. But neither their literature nor anything on their website tells you that it doesn't work with some printers. And not some strange brand. Canon printers. I have a Canon F80 which works just fine by direct USB connection. But after 30 min with technical support, the tech decides to ask what my printer is. He then says that according to their documents the USB print server doesn't work with my printer. He then tells me I can BUY the other WPS11 print server and it will work with the Canon F80. But they won't take back the PPS1UW print server ("That's not our policy.") Now I could probably get sued for calling this what I think it really is, so I'll just settle for "false and misleading advertising". Save your money and try another company who doesn't hide their product's deficiencies and who stands behind their products. If I hadn't already invested money in a Linksys router (and signal booster since the signal is terrible), I'd toss them also. As it is, I'm out $90.

I got it working with a HP DeskJet 5550 within 1 hour... the primary problem I ran into was when trying to install the print driver using the linksys software. When I went so far as to get a port installed onto the system, then ran the HP driver install using the port that was created for the printer, it worked.

"Best wireless router in its class and beyond" 2009-11-28

I bought it when Zyxel ran promo with less than $70.00. After testing the coverage and wired speed I soon use it to replace my old D-LINK DIR655, although that was a very good router in its time.

The X550N has coverage at least 70% better than that of DIR655. I had compared the coverage by putting the router next to Verizon modem in the kitchen and took the laptop with wireless N adapter outside in the parking lot. I found after I walked six parking spots away from my home, I got really weak signal from DIR655; But with the new X550N, I could walk further to the other end of the lot and still get pretty good signal for me to surf the Internet easily. Honestly speaking, this is much better than some pro wifi coverage I have seen in different offices and hotels I have been.

The wireless scheduling and QoS MDM features are also very handy. I had made the router turn its WiFi off when I was at sleep; and the MDM gets me clear voice calls with my vonage box. Last week I did a test on the router by transferring a video file in wire connection, I was surprise to find out I could get the 1.2 GB file between computer very quickly! It makes my monthly backup much much esier. The X550N indeed is the best home router you can find.

Bought this to replace a Linksys A+G router that was failing for the second time. The Zyzel router was a great price (with a rebate to boot!), was easy to install/set-up, and has been working like a charm. The range has been excellent, and has been better than any previous router we have, reaching throughout our entire two story house. My only complaint is that it is Draft N, and so I worry about compatibility with other N devices, but thus far it has not been a problem.

I bought this router to replace kinda buggy Linksys RangePlus-n Wireless Router WRT110 (WRT110 was freezing when I connected several devices into it) and I have to say this was an excellent choice. The router is easy to setup, has overall more features than WRT110, has very strong signal (much stronger than WRT110 - places where my iPhone did not detect WRT110, Zyxel had full strong signal) and power adapter is from 110V-250V which means that works in both US and with $4 adapter in Europe as well (this is probably features not many people need, but I did on my long trip to Europe).

I also like web based management for mobile devices (it looks very nice on iPhones) which auto-detects browser you use (no more pinching on iPhone).

I connected several laptops, 2 iPhones and AppleTV with no issues.

I had x-550 MIMO for a couple of years and it is still working. I decided to upgrade to a new router because I had some issues with multiple computers and I'm getting a NAT and 550N has better features for it. The router is good, I got it up and running in 5 minutes, but new interface is confusing as hell! Setup disc didn't help me at all because only thing it said "you don't have network adapter"...

My old router had list of MAC addresses everywhere you need to enter MAC-address and it was really convenient. In 550N you have actually type it in, and what if you have 5 computers or more and they are far from each other?

Another thing I didn't like - network encryption key is open in plain text. Seriously? Old router had it protected!

After few hours I still don't know exatcly how to set up access control and schedule for a particular computer... In my old router you had a setting - access control. It was intuitive, easy setup to enable log for a machine mac address or ip address or both, schedule time, and some other settings. New router the spread through I don't know how many different menus. User guide is also really bad organized and not informative. Old router had help in the web-interface itself, here you have to open pdf file and read it.... While you are trying to find help in it, admin session ends and you have log in again, and again, and again... I don't understand why company went from better to worse manuals and setting organization....

Well, my complaints are not about router's performance, I didn't have it long enough yet. But the way all settings are organized is awful. To me this is really important - I need often go and change something fast, and here you cant really do that.

Just remembered another thing - I always e-mail router logs to myself because I monitor some computer activity in my network and I have to have a history of it. Zyxel removed few setting from the router and now I cant properly configure one of the most important features the router must have. I'll try to do it with different mail server later, but it really made me unhappy. They actually removed a lot of convenient settings from new router that were in old one!

I don't know if I will keep it yet, I will test run it for a week or more. If I'll have the same issues I had with my old one - I'll send it back because old one is still working fine.

Will I recommend it? Yes, so far it working great, and it is important, and it has a lot of good features, just be prepared to read a lot and spend couple of hours to configure everything you need. It is not intuitive at all.

"Brother does not know everything for WiFi" 2009-11-16

My brother talked me into buying this product and I got it in no time. I installed in on Vista and the signals on the present surounding WiFi's were stronger, but the one very hot spot 1 block away that I really wanted to bring in... did NOT work with a straight shot from my window. So, I give this product up and put in in my junk box for a day that I can sell it in a garage sale to sum other unsuspecting victim.

I see another went to Alfa, I think maybe I need to read these before making dicissions with lots of money.

Hard to complain about this for $30. Install was smooth, and it pulls in signal like I've never seen. Marginal systems at motels are now 100% reliable. And when you're out and about, there's usually (ahem) some router nearby that'll get you a quick email check. I'm ordering a second one shortly!

I purchased this item after recently purchasing the Alfa, also offered by this seller on Amazon. (USB 500mW WiFI Adapter for Wardriving & Range Extension *Strongest on the Market* $51.99)

I liked the Alfa but this one had a bigger antenna and was cheaper and looked almost identical to my Alfa so I decided to give it a try. I'm not loving it. The setup was much more difficult and I couldn't get it working on my desktop running XP at all. The Alfa plugged right in and runs like a dream on it. Also, I actually get worse reception with the big antenna than I do with the small one.

All and all, I would recommend the Alfa over this one for ease of installation (installed on XP with no additional work and installed on Vista with driver from website pretty easily). Also the Alfa seems to more consistently maintain the signal and I got more bars with it then I am getting with this GSky.

Spend the extra few dollars and go with the Alfa. (By the way, I am a SAH mom, not a computer geek, so keep that in mind when I talk of ease of install and setup.)
