"Great way to add near 1G performance to your network connection" 2009-06-01
By B. Haverkamp (San Jose, CA)
Works great. I tried the Trendnet device as well. It locked up after a few minutes of heavy traffic. Obviously this device will not go full speed but it's several times faster than my builtin 100megabit connection. I got this for full speed access to my nas which it does. Oddly the gigabit led never lights. But I have timed it at over 350 megabits continuous.

"Handy device with the easiest set-up ever" 2009-01-31
By Lars Tackmann (Copenhagen, Denmark)
I own a MacBook AIR which does not have a ethernet port (only WIFI), however from time to time I find myself in a situation where I can only connect to the Internet using ethernet. The Linksys G1000 solves this problem neatly, it is small, works right out of the box and offers good performance (although not gigabit speeds since USB 2.0 tops out at 480mbit).

In short a wonderful little device that solves my networking problems in both Windows, OS X and Linux. The only reason why I do not give it five stars is because of its ridiculous design and lack of a build in USB port (the ability to act as a USB hub would have been very nice).

 "gsky 500mw adapter" 2009-11-08
By Captain Kirk
I bought this for my mother in law's computer to pick up the signal from her daughter's house way across the street ( better than 300 ft., router is a low power linksys in the back part of their house.) I tried several different adapters over the past few months. All of them would pick up a very weak signal and most of the time would not connect or lose the signal. It was unusable.

I tried this adapter as a last resort and it picks up the signal at 70% and a sustained rate of 11 mbps and most of the time at 24 mbps. It also found three more routers , all at over 60%. So far it works great. as with a lot of adapters, the software leaves much to be desired. The gsky utility is on the disc with the drivers, but you have to hunt it, it didn't automatically present itself for install. I used this utility and it connected without problem. The drivers on the disc were the latest, I checked.

Well worth the money, saved me from having to pay for cable internet to her house.

 "Great Signal Range" 2009-09-27
By B. Titus (Huntsville, TX - USA)
I have a Desktop computer with a router (linksys - g) connected to it in my house and a laptop in my office building located a little over 300 feet away. I thought that I would give this adapter a try before I went to more expense and I'm glad I did. The computer, in the house, is in the middle of the house (single story house) and not near any windows. The laptop, in my office 300 ft away, is about 3 ft from a window on a desk and that window is facing the house. I inserted the driver cd into my office laptop and was up and running in about 10 minutes. I have a signal strength of 4 out of 5 bars and receiving at 48 to 54 mbps! I am impressed! To be fair, I have a clear line of sight between the house and the office building. There is an electrical company's overhead power line that the signal must pass under, but I still get 4 strong bars of signal. At my house and my office, I have the usual electronics and office equipment. This worked very well for me and I give this a 5 star rating based on my experience, ease of use and lightning fast shipping. I found that some folks that have these type of adapters have different experiences which vary depending on environmental conditions, computer issues or just not understanding how to use the adapter to its full capacity. Those experiences and situations may lead one to write a bad review. I read the reviews before I bought and considered each person's situation and experience as best as I could. Having said that, I would recommend this adapter to those with a similar situation like mine. I love it!

 "A BIG SURPRISE!!!" 2009-07-04
By Philip Rice (Redondo Beach, CA)
I purchased this unit and was simply amazed at how well it performed. Yes, I do WarDriving and I look for the best sensitivity possible in rooting out access points.

I had been using the standard Orinoco Gold PCMCIA card in my laptop with a 7 dbi mag mounted antenna for my hobbyist pursuits.

When I received the G-Sky I was surprised at how little it was, which is okay because I know all electronics are now almost on one chip when it comes to these devices. What was really great is the SMA connector that allows one to put different antennas on it that have the R-SMA connectors. This means I can use the supplied with the unit antenna or easily swap in my yagi or 7 foot high gain vertical by just attaching to it via a mating pigtail.

Out of the box comparisons between the Orinoco card with a 7dbi antenna and the G-Sky with its, what appears to be about a 5dbi antenna, were startingly different. For one, with the Orinoco card from my desktop I can detect 5 local access points within a 300 foot radius of my property. With the G-Sky, using its simple attached antenna, I was able to detect 9 access points right from my desktop. Now that is really a big difference.

Of note, when I compared the received signal strengths of the 5 Orinoco detects to the same ones on the G-Sky, there was an across the board difference of over 20 db, which translates into the difference of a whisper when compared to a normally speaking voice (I'll spare the mathematics on this comparison). The G-Sky shouts!!!

I confess that I did not test the output power of the G-Sky but did note that it became slightly warm to the touch, which means that it is consuming power. The heat probably, and this is a guess, is probably wasted heat in the circuitry and the rest of the power is radiated in the transmit mode. My guess is there is probably a 50% efficiency working here. That means if the unit is pulling down 1 watt of energy and is radiating 50%, that becomes 1/2 watt of output. I feel the unit is producing that amount of power when necessary.

This unit also uses the 8187 Reatek chipset which is the one you want to have.

For the price and features and adaptability this is a REALLY GREAT DEAL. I have no experience with the Alfas but have not heard anything bad about them. I think this unit is on par with them based upon anectdotal evidence and the Realtek chipset.

 "Out Standing Product..." 2009-06-10

I installed the driver and wireless utility onto my laptop.

I wasn't expecting as good of a turnout as I got...

The closest/strongest signal without this device came in at 20% or less, but after I hooked it up, that same signal shot up to 90+%.

I think this device works fantastic...

I am giving it a 5 star rating, for its easy setup/installation, and its outstanding performance...

Don't bother paying the price for this one. Buy the cheaper thumbdrive looking cousin and save yourself some $$.

 "WMP55AG review" 2007-05-21
By G. Slade (UK)
I am a third line commercial network administrator and my cousin asked me to come over and install the wmp55ag card after it had stopped working. Apparently she thought some update had disabled it. I spent at least two hours trying to get the thing working with an 802.11b network downstairs

which it refused to associate with although it said it could on the box. I could see all the networks in the area but could not get an ip address or connect to any of them even though the one I needed to connect to was unsecured. I uninstalled the linksys software and tried using windows to control the card, still nada. In my opinion the card is a waste of time and money, or the one I had was broken after three weeks of use.

By Dain G. Gutzmer (San Diego, CA)
This card was very easy to install and setup. Just follow the easy instructions! It makes me laugh at some people who think it's the technology's fault for it not working. If you just took the time to actually read the directions you might get it to work. This product works great on the 802.11a band on my Linksys Wireless Dual-Band A+G Router.

 "Wireless on the Desktop" 2005-01-21
By Ned (Eldersburg, Maryland United States)
I just recently move from dial-up to DSL. Going DSL was not enough; I did not want to have cables running though the house so I started looking into going wireless. To make a long story short, after a little investigation I decided to make the leap into wireless technology. I purchased the WAP55AG router and the adapter cards, WMP55AG and WPC55AG.

Once the WAP55AG router was installed and set up, the installation of the WMP55AG PCI Adapter on each of the desktops were simple.

I had no difficulty setting up the hardware and software and with a few hours, I was on the net through the router. One desktop is running XP professional and the other desktops are running XP Home edition.

The LinkSys Web site has all the documentation you need for installation and setup. There is a "Knowledge Base" page that covers a lot of the products and answers to a lot of questions about various products and configurations; I found it to be very helpful.

 "poor" 2004-07-27
By C. Champion
first off, i am a fairly seasoned network administrator. I recently began using wireless at my home, with a d-link extreme-g access point and one of the machines using a d-link 802.11g card. All was fine. I decided to add 802 support to an additional pc but wanted something more flexible (as i move around) so i choose this linksys A+G card. . .

*after* the product arrives, i noticed on the box it says Draft 802.11g support, however amazon.com advertised it as regular 802.11g support.

After a blue-screen hangup (in winXP SP1), a download of some new drivers from linksys, and about 3 hours of trying every possible setting there is, the linksys product did not work.

My access point has the latest firmware, and at least one other client here at home (using a d-link card) can connect just fine. I figure this card does not work because it (now that i realize) only supports the Draft 802.11g standard, however my access point also supports 802.11b which this card is supposed to support as well?

Bottom line, this product was no good.

Subject to customer authorization by Linksys.

The Linksys Wireless-G Router for Mobile Broadband is really three devices in one box. First, theres the Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect both screaming fast Wireless-G (802.11g at 54Mbps) and Wireless-B (802.11b at 11Mbps) devices to the network. Second, it is a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices together. Connect four PCs directly or attach more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need. Thirdly, the Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a mobile broadband Internet connection (requires a mobile broadband data card). Alternatively, you can also connect a cable or DSL modem to the Ethernet port and access the Internet via your available broadband service. Once your computers are connected to the Router and the Internet, they can communicate with each other too, sharing document files, a printer, storage space, and other resources.

If a client is without internet for whatever reason, this can serve them for a short time days until they are back online.

It's easy to setup and with the firmware update never drops the connection to Sprint.

I got the wrong antenna at first, however the seller resent it to me and it works pretty good.

I thought that I could just screw this onto the back of Linksys wireless router(replacing the antenna).

This antenna has some sort of base(and it can't be removed from it, like it can't be unscrewed). . .i think it's for a wireless card, not a router.

I repeat! This is NOT the item in the picture.

Bought this to replace the crappy antenna on my dlink router and there are no adequate words to describe how satisfied I am with this product. Not only is it super affordable, I received it a couple of days earlier than expected and it worked flawlessly. Now I can surf anywhere in my house. Thanks guys and gals, job well done!
